Blue Submarine No. 6

You're only as evil as those who see you as such
Zorndyke, once a much respected and brilliant scientist, has suddenly, descended into madness motivated by a personal tragedy. He has raised the global temperature, melting the icecaps at the poles and flooding much of the grain producing regions of the world.
What remains of the massacre are scattered human settlements composed of survivors of the apocalyptic event.
The world now turns to the “Blues”, advanced submarines constructed to defeat Zorndyke and his mutant creations (hybrid constructs using marine life and human DNA) before humanity faces extinction.
While Blue Sub 6 manages to carry itself quite well at the beginning of the series, it falls a bit short toward the middle. The audience is “expected to know” somehow the back story of the characters. And the reveal feels a bit rushed at times, taking away from an otherwise well crafted atmosphere.
The “Evil Genius” isn’t evil enough and good guys are just above “normal”, especially considering their circumstances. This leaves the whole premise somewhat unfulfilled. One is left to wonder, “what was the point?”
The animation is very well done and aside from the plot, which is pretty much all about getting Zorndyke with some back story sprinkled here and there.
There may be some who find Blue Sub’s scenes a bit distracting because of its blend of CGI and cell animation. I think this series manages to pull it off without affecting the overall viewing experience.
Those with a particular affinity for apocalyptic or post apocalyptic titles without a completely desperate and bleak ending will enjoy this series.
