Prepare yourself for one of the catchiest and high energy theme songs to come out in quite some time.
Konata Izumi, Kona-chan, is an athletic type and a bit of an Otaku. She doesn’t join any teams despite her athleticism because she doesn’t want to miss her anime. She is also a video game fanatic.
Tsukasa Hiiragi is the friendly type and quintissential air-head of the series. Miyuki Takara is the intelligent one (with glasses to match) and is also well mannered. Something inherited from her upbrining.
Kagami Hiiragi is Tsukasa’s fraternal twin sister and the typical know-it-all who likes to present an opinion, fact or other snippet of herself at every opportunity.
The series revolves around these four young ladies as they go through school life and learn a few things about each other as well as boys.
Alas, the theme song was one of the high points in the entire series and, in fact, the first episode was one of the most boring entries ever. I was literally fighting the urge to fast forward for the fear of missing the one or two jokes at the start.
Over the struggling first episode, the story did pick up a bit toward the rest of the series, but not by much. Not enough to save the entire story. The animation was average at best and sub-par at worst. There were times where the characters and background didn’t seem on par and it wasn’t to comedic effect either.
Kyoto Animation, the series producers, had its director changed from Yutaka Yamamoto to Yasuhiro Takemoto after epsisode 4 and there’s a noticable difference in the series at that point.
This is not a title that lives up to the manga and the execution in general leaves a lot to be desired.
An O.K. series that’s safe to miss. Although it might be an easy title to watch over on a rainy weekend or sickday.
