Ouran High School Host Club

Where the Super Rich go to relax and do nothing

Where the Super Rich go to relax and do nothing

When Haruhi Fujioka, a poor “commoner”, goes to one of the most prestigious schools in all of Japan, she is in for quite a shock.

Set aside your impressions on the super rich as nothing will prepare you for the indulgences these students with unlimited funds could afford.

Haruhi just wants to study, but an inadvertent act (triggered by the “King” of the Host Club, Tamaki) causes her to be indebted to the Club and has to join this bizarre collective to pay it off.

She’s initially taken in as a guy, because of her tomboyish looks and attitude. Haruhi doesn’t really care about gender roles. However, her good looks make her a favorite among her fellow hosts before any of them realize “he’s” actually a “she”.

The Club will go to any length to keep this a secret, as Haruhi quickly becomes one of the top hosts, threatening the “King” himself in some cases. They all become very fond of Haruhi, going from curiosity (as the poorest student at Ouran) to crush, and in Tamaki’s case, she manages to become the love interest. The feeling isn’t reciprocated, of course. She thinks he’s just obnoxious… at first.

Ouran High School Host Club is your garden variety blend of slapstick, comedy, romance and every Shoujo cliché imaginable. But this is because the anime doesn’t take itself seriously.

Including copious amounts of self-referential humor, the series doesn’t really stray away from the expected path for such a title. Indeed the humor is all based on classic Shoujo titles and many of the plot points, character traits and situations have all been done before. The series is really a parody of itself, taking great pains to convert all the ingredients into a full meal of a plot.

Something that adds to the humor are the labels that drop by explaining the scenario at hand, or elaborating on the characters. The episodes are rather disjointed with several giving some back story to the characters. But this doesn’t take away from the viewing experience.

It’s a clever series for what it hopes to accomplish. A fun and light series that’s well worth to watch.
